A few weeks ago, someone from Iconify contacted me with regards to promoting their service on my website, and typically I would just ignore the email, but I was in the process of reprocessing my portfolio, and looking for a new website to put it on, so I gave it a go.
I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity and the process and how fast it was to create. My previous portfolio used a theme which scrolled sideways, which is apparently a massive no-no in web design, but alas I was ignorant to this fact at the time.
If you’re looking to set up your own website portfolio (which is something you should all have), then I don’t think you can go too wrong with Iconify.
This is a paid service, but it’s only $5 a month, which is cheaper than most services, because even minimal hosting can cost more than this.
The first thing that jumps to mind is that it’s very easy to set up. Infact, I found that uploading the images was the longest process. The design is all handled by them, and there is a choice of two themes.
It’s a very easy to navigate website, with all the photos organised nicely into different albums.
The functionality is superb. It works on just about every device you could want it to (something which isn’t easy), and it especially looks good on an iPad, where you can use the iPad’s functionality too.
For the price, it’s a very professional looking portfolio. I run a few websites, and the time, effort, and expense that goes into creating them can be really high. With this service, it’s a good looking website, at a fraction of the cost. That sounds like a lame sales pitch, but that’s my opinion.
It’s easy to see how many people have been visiting your website, as well as how long they’re on your website, and other important information.
They make it easy to find contact information, and encourage sharing too.
You can save the website as an app on different Apple products, and you can create a custom app icon to go with it. It’s a nice touch.
I personally recommend that you blog. It helps get yourself noticed in Google in your local area, but that’s not possible using this service. You can link to a blog, but it’s not all incorporated into one, which is a bit of a pain.
I did find some trouble with uploading more than about 20 photos at once. It didn’t like it too much, and I had to upload in smaller batches. It’s still a young service though, so hopefully they will iron out these bugs soon.
There’s currently only two themes to choose from, so if this starts to become a very popular service, you may find other portfolios looking much like yours.
In my opinion, it’s almost like the Apple of photography portfolios. It’s modern, and painfully simple, doing exactly what you need it to, without any of the clutter which often surrounds portfolio websites.
If you don’t want to have an Iconify URL, you can always have your website automatically redirect to Iconify, so you can keep your current URL.
