For detailed retouching, layered composites and precise selections, choose the current desktop Photoshop. For guided photo edits, consider Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Express suits quick phone edits, while Adobe Express helps you turn photos into social posts, flyers and other designs.

The names can be confusing. A Photoshop release number, such as 27.x, identifies an update to the desktop program. Elements and Express are separate applications. Photoshop on the web, iPad and phones also have their own features and requirements. Here is how to choose the route that fits your work.

What Is Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is an image editor for photographs, composites, graphics and digital artwork. Layers let you keep different parts of an edit separate. Selections and masks help you change one part of a photograph without changing everything else.

For example, you can adjust a portrait's background on one layer and retouch the subject on another. That control is a reason to learn desktop Photoshop when simple filters no longer give you the result you want.

The interface takes practice. Start with cropping, basic adjustments and layers before tackling a complicated composite. For a structured start, try our Photoshop tutorials, including our guide to the basic tools.

Which Photoshop Should You Get?

Choose by the edit you need to make, then check whether your device supports the application:

  • Detailed retouching and composites: desktop Photoshop offers the broadest Photoshop workflow. It is the main choice here for photographers who need extensive control over individual images.
  • Guided edits to family and travel photos: Photoshop Elements gives you simpler starting points and room to learn manual editing.
  • Quick phone edits and collages: Photoshop Express is built around mobile photography and sharing.
  • Touch editing with layers: Photoshop on iPad or a supported phone gives you a portable Photoshop workflow. The tools differ from desktop.
  • Social graphics and layouts: Adobe Express combines images, text and templates. It is a separate design app, rather than another release of Photoshop.

If you mainly need to organize a shoot and adjust many RAW files, also read our Photoshop vs. Lightroom comparison. That is a different choice from deciding which Photoshop app to install.

Release Numbers, CC and Legacy Editions

As checked on 11 October 2026, Adobe's supported-version reference identifies 27.x as the current desktop release family and 26.x as the prior one. Both receive technical support and security fixes; bug fixes are listed for the current family. The smaller number after the first dot identifies a particular update within that family.

“Photoshop CC” is the Creative Cloud name you will still see in older tutorials and the product card below. For a new desktop workflow, start with a supported release offered by Creative Cloud. Do not treat CC, Elements and Express as successive release numbers of the same program.

Photoshop CS6 and earlier CS editions are legacy releases outside Adobe's current Photoshop support policy. An old tutorial may still explain a useful technique, but its menus, camera support and installation advice can differ from the current app. Do not choose a legacy release on an unsupported claim that it is the most stable version.

Best For
Photography enthusiasts and professionals who want to perform custom creative edits

Adobe Photoshop CC refers to the full desktop editor. It is the best fit among these options when you want precise selections, masks, retouching and multi-layer composites. You can use it for a small exposure correction or build an image from several photographs.

Its strength is control. Keep a color adjustment on a separate layer, mask it to the area that needs work and revise it later. The same tools support design and illustration as well as photography. The trade-off is the time needed to learn the workspace.

Generative Fill can add or replace content in a selection, and Generative Expand can extend an image beyond its original frame. These tools can help with creative changes, but inspect the result at full size for unwanted details. They are not a reason to skip the basic selection and masking tools.

Photoshop CC uses a subscription-based service. Adobe offers desktop Photoshop through a single-app plan and other Creative Cloud plans, including a Photography plan with Lightroom. Pick a plan for the apps you need; a different bundle does not turn the same desktop release into a different editing program.

Before installing, use Adobe's desktop system requirements for your release and operating system. For 27.x, Adobe lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum and recommends 16 GB or more. The minimum installation space is 10 GB, with 100 GB recommended. Supported operating-system versions and GPU requirements also matter; RAM alone does not establish compatibility.

Best For
Photographers who want to make custom edits but don't want to spend much time at a computer

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a separate desktop photo editor for people who want guidance as they work. Its Quick, Guided and Advanced modes let you move from simple corrections to more manual editing without starting with the full Photoshop workspace.

Quick mode suits a straightforward improvement to a snapshot. Guided mode walks you through a chosen effect or edit. Advanced mode offers more control when you want to work with layers and refine the result. For a closer comparison of the two desktop editors, see Photoshop Elements vs. Photoshop CC.

Adobe currently presents Elements 2027 on its product page. Its three-year term license uses one payment and expires three years after redemption. The editor is no longer accessible after expiry, although the Elements Organizer media catalog remains accessible. This is a fixed term, rather than a perpetual license or an ongoing Photoshop subscription.

Photoshop Elements is worth considering for guided personal photo projects. Choose desktop Photoshop if the work calls for its more extensive editing tools. Before buying Elements, check the requirements for the current edition: Elements 2027 requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, or supported macOS versions on Apple silicon. An older computer that ran a previous Elements edition may not run this one.

Phone photographers who want a range of specialized and custom editing options

Adobe Photoshop Express is a separate app focused on mobile photography. Use it when you want to adjust a phone photo, apply a look, make a collage or prepare an image for sharing without learning desktop Photoshop.

It is free to download, with additional premium features. Adobe's product page describes filters, cutouts, portrait tools and collages. Some advanced healing features require Premium, so check which tools your account can use before you base a project on them.

Express is also different from the Photoshop mobile app. Start with the result you want: quick adjustments and a collage are a good reason to try Express; layers and a more Photoshop-like editing workflow are a reason to compare the Photoshop app.

Photoshop Express is offered through the Apple App Store, Google Play and the Microsoft Store. For a phone or tablet, use its current store listing and Adobe's Photoshop Express requirements to check your device. Features can differ across platforms.

Photographers who travel or those who like a condensed version of Photoshop

The Photoshop app runs on iPad, iPhone and Android phones. These are Photoshop applications with touch interfaces; they are separate from Photoshop Express and do not contain every desktop feature.

On iPad, Photoshop supports layers, masks, selections and retouching, plus tools such as Curves and Generative Fill. It is useful when you want to work directly on an image with touch or an Apple Pencil. Use Adobe's iPad requirements to check the supported model and iPadOS version.

The Photoshop app lets phone users edit photos while on the go. Adobe recommends iOS 18 or later for iPhone, and Android 11 or later with at least 6 GB of RAM for Android phones. Its Android requirements exclude Android tablets and Chromebooks. Check the mobile requirements for the exact device you use.

Photoshop on mobile and iPad is free to download, with premium features available through a subscription. Adobe's Photoshop Mobile and Web plan includes premium mobile features, Photoshop on the web and Photoshop on iPad. It is a different plan from the desktop Photoshop offer linked in the card above. Check the apps included in your plan before you subscribe. A free phone download does not give you the paid desktop editor.

Photoshop on the Web

Photoshop on the web is another way to edit with Photoshop, using a browser rather than the installed desktop app. Adobe documents layers, selections, adjustments, retouching and generative tools in its web help.

Use it for an edit that its available tools can handle, or to continue work on a cloud document. For a workflow that needs a particular desktop tool or plug-in, compare Adobe's web and desktop feature documentation before moving the job. Photoshop on the web and Adobe Express are different applications, even though both can run in a browser.

Beginners who want to make custom graphic designs with ease

Adobe Express is a design and content creation app. It helps you combine photographs, text, templates and other assets into social posts, flyers, invitations and videos. It is not a Photoshop release or a direct replacement for detailed desktop retouching.

It can also make image edits, such as cropping, resizing and removing a background. That makes it useful for a finished design built around a photograph. If the photograph itself needs detailed masking or retouching, edit it in Photoshop first, then use Express for the layout.

Adobe offers both Free and Premium plans. Templates and generative tools vary by plan, so “free” does not describe every Express feature. Its browser and mobile versions also have their own technical requirements.

Adobe Express is a practical choice when your goal is a graphic rather than a layered photo composite. Use Adobe's desktop web requirements to check your browser, operating system, memory and hardware acceleration.

Common Photoshop Version Questions

What Photoshop Version Is Best for Beginners?

Photoshop Elements is a useful starting point if you want guided edits to personal photographs. Start with Photoshop CC if you want to learn the full editor for detailed retouching and composites. Learning Elements first is optional, rather than a required step toward Photoshop.

Learn a few tools at a time and practise on a copy of your image. Our Photoshop tutorials cover techniques you can use as your skills grow.

What Is the Best Photoshop App?

The Photoshop app on iPad suits touch editing with layers and masks. On a phone, compare Photoshop mobile with Photoshop Express: the former offers a Photoshop workflow, while Express focuses on quick photo edits and collages. Choose the app for the task and supported device, rather than treating one app as the best for everyone.

What Is the Current Photoshop Version?

Adobe lists 27.x as the current supported desktop family as checked on 11 October 2026. Use its release notes for individual updates. To see your installed build, choose Help > About Photoshop on Windows or Photoshop > About Photoshop on macOS.

Which Photoshop Version Is Most Stable?

There is no single release that this article can establish as the most stable on every computer. Use Adobe's supported-version list and known-issues documentation, then test the tools, plug-ins and files that matter to your work. Before a major update, keep backups and use Creative Cloud's option to retain the previous version until you have checked the new one.

Conclusion: Choose Photoshop for the Work You Do

Photoshop CC remains the main choice here for detailed desktop photo editing. Elements offers guided editing, Photoshop's web and mobile apps offer other ways to work, and the two Express products serve different tasks: Photoshop Express for quick photo edits, Adobe Express for designs and layouts.

Choose the editing job first, then confirm the app, device requirements and license. That will give you a more useful answer than a universal ranking of everything with “Photoshop” in its name.
