12. Olympus Tough TG-5

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 1/2.3in
  • Megapixels: 12MP
  • Lens: 25-100mm f/2-4.9
  • LCD: 3in, 460k dots
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 20fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K
  • User level: From kids to adults

This rootin’-tootin’ point and shoot from Olympus is the all-rounder when it comes to proofing. You can drop it,  freeze it, and even throw it in a dirt devil.

Compared to other adventure point-and-shoot cameras, it is very easy to focus and shoot.

Even your kids can use it, knowing it is safe in their hands. This is the boy-scout; ready for anything you throw at it. It is called ‘Tough’ for a reason.

Ok, its sensor isn’t the biggest, especially compared to other similar models, but it does shoot in Raw. 20fps means never missing a moment, no matter what it might be.

The 4k video comes as standard and even houses a 120fps slow-motion recording option – in full-HD. you can enjoy it, even if you don’t feel like manually changing the settings it does offer.

You can find cheaper point-and-shoot models if these specs don’t excite you. The sensor is only 12 MP but retains a very sharp and impressive image quality

11. Light L16

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 16 independent 13-megapixel sensors
  • Megapixels: 52 MP
  • Lens: 5×28, 5×70 and 6×150 mm full-frame equivalent
  • LCD: 5″ FHD touchscreen
  • Max video resolution: 1080p
  • User level: Beginner/enthusiast

The L16 is a revolutionary camera, which is breaking the mold of form and tech for future digital cameras to come. If you are a sufferer of trypophobia, look away now.

What you’ll find are 16 independent cameras. They form together to create a single image. Out of the 16 lenses present, there are three different types of lenses: 28, 70 and 150 mm, all full-frame equivalent.

The different focal lengths and exposure levels are independent, yet work together in capturing scenes like never before.

The image files can reach 52 MP in resolution, making it feel like editing a medium format image.

Although it is much different to cameras you would otherwise have access to, it does suffer in some areas. Autofocusing is one of these. But, the photographer can alter the focus during the post-production stage.

It’s a perfect compact camera for very high end shoots with a professional resolution.

10. Panasonic TZ200 / SZ200

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 1in
  • Megapixels: 20.1MP
  • Lens: 24-360mm f/3.3-6.4 (equiv.)
  • LCD: 3in fixed touchscreen, 1.24 million dots
  • Viewfinder: EVF
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 10fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K
  • User level: Beginner/enthusiast

Those most likely to choose a compact camera are travelers and holiday-goers. Both groups do not want to be tied down by large camera systems that weigh a ton.

If it takes a picture, it might be enough for you without knowing every setting exactly.

For travel cameras, the Panasonic TZ200 / SZ200 is a great piece of kit. It houses a 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor, and unlike its predecessor, comes with a 15x zoom lens. This gets you to a 360mm equivalent lens with a 24mm wide focal length.

There are longer zooms on other compact cameras, but it will be the biggest with a sensor this small. What we like is Raw capturing and 4K video for off the cuff reporting or travel vlogging.

If you’re not into video, it allows 8k images with a burst sequence of 30fps.

You’ll also note there is a macro mode, allowing crystal sharp images from 3cm. The biggest selling point is being able to select the focus AFTER you’ve taken the image.

That is something you can’t overlook.

9. Canon Powershot SX620 HS

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 1/2.3in
  • Megapixels: 20.2MP
  • Lens: 25-625mm f/3.2-6.6 (equiv.)
  • LCD: 3in, 922k dots
  • Viewfinder: No
  • Continuous shooting: 2.5fps
  • Max video resolution: Full HD
  • User level: Beginner

If you’re looking for a superzoom travel camera, you found the right camera. What you will get is a 25-625mm equivalent zoom system, that won’t break the bank.

Actually, you get more zoom with this miniature beast than any other compact camera we can find. Especially in terms of zoom-to-price ratio.

Why would you want a zoom? Well, apart from photographing the details of the face of the moon, it is super handy. It means you don’t have to get in people’s faces to get a close-up.

The 1/2.3-inch sensor is limited in terms of resolution. Those outside the hobbyist realm might not be impressed by its operation or range of settings. But it’s cost-effective.

It’s fast, family-friendly, and ensures a nice shot of whatever you point it at. Being compact, means you don’t need to compromise on space either.

8. Sony RX100 VI

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 1 inch
  • Megapixels: 20.10 MP
  • Lens:24-200mm equivalent f/2.8
  • LCD: 3in fixed, 1,040,000 dots
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 24 fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K

Also, 24fps comes as standard, meaning you won’t miss that valuable shot.

A 4K detailed video mode awaits for any impromptu recording you might find, making it a great vlogging camera. Small, yet efficient, and offers the first touch screen and electronic viewfinder of the series.

For fast-moving subjects, or captured on the move, a 5-axis image stabilization awaits. This is also great in low light conditions.

The USB charging is very useful, allowing you to capture and recharge in most areas around the globe.

7. Nikon Coolpix P900

  • Type: Superzoom compact
  • Sensor: 1/2.3in
  • Megapixels: 16MP
  • Lens: 24-2000mm (equiv.) f/2.8-6.5
  • LCD: 3in articulating, 921k dots
  • Viewfinder: EVF, 921k dots
  • Maximum continuous shooting rate: 7fps
  • Movies: Full HD (1080p)
  • User level: Beginner/enthusiast

For superzoom solutions, there is the Nikon Coolpix P900. Not only does it beat the pants off its competition, but it also does it in grandeur style.

2000mm equivalent is the super telephoto lens limit on in this model, which is great for capturing a fly on a sandwich at 400 yards away!

Not only does it beat all compact cameras on our list, but some DSLRs can’t reach this range. This might explain why it was such a big success with astrophotographers.

What we like is the five-stop vibration reduction system which is common across Nikon camera systems. If that isn’t enough, you get a lot of manual control over settings, which allows for experimentation.

In addition, you get Wi-Fi, NFC, and even GPS. Great for finding out exactly where you took the image you are bragging about. While this all sounds impressive, there isn’t a Raw capture possibility.

If you are partial to touch-screen LCD screens, then this isn’t for you either.

Even though the sensor could be bigger, you’d be hard pushed to find something this unique for its price.

6. Panasonic Lumix G9

  • Sensor: Four Thirds
  • Megapixels: 20 MP
  • Lens: Interchangeable
  • LCD: 3in fixed Touch screen, 1,040,000 dots
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 20 fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K
  • User level: Beginner/enthusiast

If you’re looking for a good all-rounder, the Panasonic Lumix G9 might just be the camera for you. It’s a four-thirds system that takes its precedence from the very successful GH5 model.

Fast-burst rates and outstanding image stabilization come as standard. You’ll get great image quality and as much customization as you can stomach. All in a weather sealed and lightweight body.

In terms of competition, users would find similarities between this and the E-M1 Mark II. The biggest difference between them is the autofocus system. The G9 uses a newer type, known as DFD (depth from defocus).

It might not be as accurate for high-speed subjects, it is very accurate for every other environment you’ll find yourself in. Especially ones in low-light conditions.

Photographers find that the hand-grip is bigger, roomier and easier to use.

5. Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Megapixels: 24.2MP

  • LCD: 3in vari-angle touchscreen, 1.04 million dots
  • Viewfinder: EVF
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 7fps
  • Max video resolution: Full HD
  • User level: Enthusiast/expert

Canon is known through the land as having great compact cameras, namely through their Powershot series. The G1 Mark III is a premium version with a zoom camera, perfect for any and all enthusiast photographers.

The APS-C sensor doesn’t disappoint with the 24.2 MP resolution. Those who know the series remember that they were the first company to place large sensors in small bodies.

This one comes in a DSLR style body, but smaller and with an electronic viewfinder.

It’s a pocketable camera thanks to the retractable lens. You’ll also find that 7fps with autofocus or 9fps with a fixed focus are quite respectable. Even the buffering that comes with it works well.

You can take 24 jpgs or 19 Raw images before it slows down.

4. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II

  • Sensor: Four Thirds
  • Megapixels: 20.4 Megapixel
  • Lens: Interchangeable
  • LCD: 3in articulated, 1,037,000 dots
  • Maximum continuous shooting speed: 60 fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K
  • User level: Enthusiast/expert

If on your travels you prefer to capture wildlife and high-speed subject, this is for you. This package, coming in smaller than DSLRs, allow for incredibly fast capture speeds. You can reach 60fps with single

Auto-focus mode, and both mechanical and electronic shutter speeds are class-leading.

On top of the speed, it comes as one of the best weather sealed bodies able for interchanging lenses. If Olympus is known for one thing, it is incredibly fast, accurate and sharp autofocusing.

The OM-D E-M1 Mark II is no different.

As far as cameras go, this is as versatile as they get. From capturing portraits to animals on the move. You won’t be disappointed by the image quality or the resolution of the video.

If you feel like setting up your camera somewhere more static, you can place a ‘view’ on your smartphone.

You can see what your camera see’s on your phone via the Olympus Image Share app and Wi-Fi. Then you can change the exposure, focus or shooting modes.

3. Fujifilm X100F

  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Megapixels: 24.3MP
  • Lens: 23mm f/2
  • Monitor: 3in fixed, 1,040,000 dots
  • Viewfinder: Hybrid optical/EVF
  • Continuous shooting: 8fps
  • Max video resolution: 1080p
  • User level: Expert

Although this compact camera isn’t the cheapest, it doesn’t come close to the Leica Q2. You’ll find that more of your friends will have the X100F instead of the Q2, allowing you to swap and exchange lenses for more shooting opportunities.

It has a retro design, a hybrid electronic/digital viewfinder, and an APS-C sensor, which is large for a compact. The lens is fixed but gives you great quality at its 23 mm focal length and a wide aperture of f/2.

The 24.3mp sensor, matched with the X-Processor Pro engine and Film Simulation modes ensuring top quality pics.

The X100F is the fourth in its line, where perfection has been obtained. You find a new control layout, improved auto-focusing and an expanded range of sensitivity.

Don’t get us wrong, the benefits come with a price tag. But a perfect camera for those who want more chutzpah than smaller compact cameras.

2. Leica Q2

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor size: Full frame
  • Megapixels: 47MP
  • Lens: 28mm, f/1.7
  • LCD: 3in fixed touchscreen, 1.04 million dots
  • Viewfinder: EVF
  • Continuous shooting: 10fps
  • Max video resolution: Full HD
  • User level: Enthusiast/Expert

If you have the budget, get the Q2. There are tons of reasons to do so, and although the price is hefty, it is because the camera is awesome.

For compact camera sensors and resolution, this comes ahead with a full-frame 47MP sensor.

Your images, just like your camera, will be the envy of anyone who walks past you. You might even make a few friends. The design sticks to classic minimalist Leica style – timelessly sleek.

The lens is a Summilux f/1.7 28mm, which is more than enough for travel and street photography. Most of what you capture on your travels is a form of documentary, so you’ll be happy to include most of the setting you capture in.

Some might pick at the static LCD screen or lack of pop-up flash (who uses a pop-up flash?!) At the end of the day, this is more than just a camera. You hold a part of history in your hands.

1. Fujifilm X-T3

  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Megapixels: 26.1-megapixel
  • Lens: Interchangeable
  • Monitor: 3in fixed, 1,040,000 dots
  • Viewfinder: 3.69-million-dot EVF
  • Continuous shooting: 30fps
  • Max video resolution: 4K
  • User level: Enthusiast/Expert

The top, compact camera is, of course, an APS-C model, and a Fuji at that. The sensor is larger than other choices on our list and comes with a resolution of over 26 MP.

This crop sensor is actually better than some DSLRs you’ll find on the market.

The benefit with this system is the interchangeable lens and its compact size. Being a mirrorless system, it can afford to reduce in size without losing quality or features. This beat won’t let you down on your travels.

Physical features look almost identical to the predecessor model, the Fujifilm X-T2. But the important part is under the hood, in the way of the improved speed of autofocus, 4K video, and faster-shooting speeds. With the sports mode, you can reach 30fps.

If you like electronic viewfinders, you’ll like this system. If video is your thing, you can shoot in 4K. There are even specialized filming lenses to help you get the most out of each scene.
