10. Choose Props in Pastel Colors
The easiest solution is to focus on colors. Choose clothes that have pastel or neutral colors as these shades symbolize innocence and calmness. Soft blue, soft pink, white, beige and navy work well for newborn photo outfits.
If the parents are also part of the newborn photoshoot, you can ask them to wear colors that match the newborn’s outfit.
Newborn photography is often dreamy and airy. For this reason, I recommend avoiding the color black.
9. Use Soft Blankets and Sheets
There is nothing cuter than a newborn baby sleeping among soft blankets. You can create a fluffy nest that also functions as a soft outfit for the newborn.
Or you can use small sheets and wrap the baby in them. This way, you don’t have to worry about how to get the clothing on and off the newborn.
8. Photograph the Newborn in Cute Animal Outfits
Cute animal costumes are very popular in newborn photography. You can find lots of sweet animal costumes for newborns online.
You can also add matching toys and props to enhance the composition.
7. Play Around with Fluffy and Frilled Textiles
You can use anything that is fluffy or frilled as outfits for newborn photos. Whether you are photographing a baby girl or a baby boy, every newborn looks super sweet in frills.
It can be a frilled dress, fluffy textile, or a cute accessory.
6. Use Bonnets and Headbands
Make sure to choose materials that won’t irritate the baby’s skin.
5. Make the Newborn Look Like a Mini Adult
Kids dressed up as small versions of adults are always adorable. Choose clothing that matches the image you had in mind. And try not to go over the top, or the results will look tacky.
4. Photograph the Baby in Rompers
Rompers are a very safe choice when it comes to baby photos. There are a lot of special newborn rompers available online.
These are easy to put on and take off the baby. Some are so advanced that the newborn can sleep through the whole dressing up process.
3. Highlight the Nude Cuteness of Newborns
Babies have soft and flawless skin that looks fantastic in photos. Newborn photographers often choose to capture their sweet subjects without any clothing. A newborn photo with a nude baby always looks very natural.
Plus, the baby won’t be annoyed or woken up by the dressing-up process. You can create a soft nest and arrange the baby in a comfortable position.
2. Dress the Newborn up as Cartoon or Movie Characters
Use movie or cartoon characters as inspiration for your newborn clothing. Maybe the parents have a favourite movie character they would love to see in the photos. Or maybe the newborn looks already a bit like a sweet cartoon character.
You don’t have to get a complicated outfit to make the newborn resemble someone. You can use props or a piece of clothing that tells the whole story. Like the pair of Harry Potter glasses below. You could even add the iconic scar with some hypoallergenic lipstick on their forehead!
1. Choose Seasonal Outfits
Get inspiration from the holiday costumes if your newborn photoshoot takes place during a special season. Christmas and Easter costumes make every newborn look even cuter.
But you can also choose a summer or an autumn outfit if that fits your baby’s personality.
Styling babies for a photoshoot is often the question of creativity. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different settings – but always make sure your subject is as comfortable as possible.
