21. Brooke Shaden

This picture is called Brighter Days. I made it to portray my undying optimism – the way I see the world. While I find dark imagery most beautiful, in my everyday life I look for blue sky days. This image was chosen to represent a new campaign that I am thrilled to share with you. @Sonyalpha presents #SonyAlphaFemale, an initiative to support women in the photography business. Sony is giving away FIVE $25,000 grants + $5,000 worth of equipment to the people selected. 🌙 Link in bio! 🌙 I have been behind the scenes working with Sony executives to help bring this to life and I am honored to be on the panel of mentors for this program. I watched this initiative come from a place of honest to goodness desire to level the playing field (and sometimes from a place of frustration, empowerment, and sincerity that blows me away). 🌙 To me, this feels like an important moment in the photo world. I cried when I found out about these grants. Why? Because it is important to me that I work with a company not just for their product but for their heart. Because I want to see people succeed and inspire others. Because I want to be in a position to help change lives. 🌙 You don't need to be a top photographer, don't need to have created your very best work, don't need to "know the right people" or ingratiate yourself to anyone. This is about selecting people who have the potential to soar, and helping that potential along financially, through mentorship, and education. 🌙 When I was brought on for this project I asked that the fine art market be represented, and they listened. So here I am, proud as pudding to be here and sharing this with you. I might even say it is one of the defining moments of my career to be a part of this. 🌙 (Because I feel I should say this – I was not told I had to share about this, wasn't pressured into saying anything at all. I'm here telling you about this because I believe in it. That is my reason for sharing anything that I share.)

A post shared by Brooke Shaden | creative soul (@brookeshaden) on

A fine art photographer, Brooke Shaden often photographs herself. Then she manipulates the image into another world. She describes her work as a look at the juxtaposition of light and dark within people.
Her images often look like they could have come from a fantasy storybook. Or even off the walls of art museums.
She started with minimal gear and resources. And she continues to often use herself as a model for her work. Hailing from Pennsylvania, she’s also an author and speaker.
Follow Brooke Shaden on Instagram for a glimpse at what’s possible in the genre. Even if the only model you have available is yourself.

20. Aydın Büyüktaş

Aydın Büyüktaş earned viral fame for his series of mind-bending aerial drone images, Flatlay. The series takes aerial landscapes and folds them away from you. As if the ground could bend like a sheet of paper.
He crafts his images using a mix of planning, composites and 3D software.
The Flatlay series earned him viral fame. But his earlier work also includes several successful mind-bending series. These question reality and even the laws of gravity. Büyüktaş is a native of Turkey.

Displacement

A post shared by Kyle Thompson (@kylejthompson) on

An interest in abandoned homes is what first inspired Kyle Thompson to pick up a camera. This initial inspiration can still be seen in his work today.
Much of his work is a self portrait taken in a forlorn location. While he’s often his own model, his work often hides his face, so it’s easy to imagine anyone in the image.
Not all his images are a result of Photoshop manipulation. But he often uses compositing to create surreal images that occasionally feel like a post-apocalyptic movie.
He also says he only knows the basics for Photoshop composting. If that’s true, his work shows what’s possible even without extensive Photoshop training.
Follow Thompson on Instagram. He’s the proof that you don’t have to be a Photoshop master to create photo manipulation art.
